This page names the city your internet connection appears to be coming from, worked out from your IP address. It is the quick answer when you are travelling and have lost track of where you are, when you want to know which city a site thinks you are in before it localises prices or search results, or when you are checking that a VPN is exiting where you expect. The lookup uses the network data attached to your request rather than your device's GPS, so it needs no permission prompt and works even with location services switched off. Most IP lookups stop at the label their database attaches to your provider, which is why they so often name the town your traffic is routed through instead of the one you are in. Why does it show the wrong city?
IP location resolves to wherever your provider routes your traffic, which can be a nearby city or a regional hub. Mobile networks and VPNs make this more likely. It is an approximation, not a position fix.
Why does my provider say one city and this page another?
Because most lookups report the label their database attaches to your provider, which is where your traffic enters the internet — often the bigger town nearby. This page ignores that label and names the municipality your connection's coordinates fall in instead, so it will often disagree with them and be closer to right. Does this use GPS or ask for permission?

How accurate is city detection from an IP address?
For fixed home broadband it is usually right at the town level, because the page names the municipality the coordinates fall in rather than repeating the provider's label.
