Terms of Service

"The site" means burrows.tools and every page and API endpoint served from it. It is run by an individual, referred to throughout these documents as the site operator. There is no company behind it and these terms do not name one; if that ever changes, this section changes with it.

"You" means whoever is using the site. Using it means you accept these terms. If you do not, the remedy is simple and complete: stop using it.

The site provides utilities — counters, formatters, converters, generators and a handful of checks that report what your own browser and connection say about you. Almost all of them run entirely in your browser: the text you paste, the files you open and the images and models you load are processed on your device and are never uploaded. The Privacy Policy sets out the few exceptions in detail.

The tools are informational. They are not professional advice of any kind — not legal, financial, medical, tax or engineering advice — and their output should be checked before you rely on it for anything that matters. A date calculator is not a lawyer, and a BMI figure is not a diagnosis.

The site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement.

There is, specifically, no promise that:

• the site will be available, or available at any given moment;
• any result a tool produces is correct, complete or suitable for your purpose;
• a tool will keep working the way it does today, or keep existing;
• anything that depends on a third party — the YouTube transcript tool most of all — will keep working when that third party changes.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

To the fullest extent the law allows, the site operator is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, or for any loss of data, profits, revenue or goodwill, arising out of your use of — or inability to use — the site, whatever the theory of liability and even if the possibility of such damage was known.

The site is free. Nothing is charged for it, and no payment is taken, so there is no fee to refund and no service credit to award.

You are welcome to use the tools for anything lawful. Please do not:

• use the site to break the law, infringe somebody else's rights, or process material you have no right to process;
• attack it — no attempts to gain unauthorised access, probe for vulnerabilities beyond good-faith research, interfere with other people's use, or overwhelm it with traffic;
• hammer the API endpoints. /api/geo and /api/youtube-transcript exist to serve the pages on this site. Automated bulk use is not what they are for, and it may be rate-limited or blocked;
• republish the site, or a copy of it, in a way that passes it off as your own or as endorsed by the site operator;
• strip, hide or misrepresent the open-source attributions the site publishes at /licenses.

Good-faith security research is welcome and is expected to follow the disclosure process in /.well-known/security.txt.

Whatever you paste, type or open in a tool remains yours. No right or licence to it is claimed, and for almost every tool the question is academic: the content never leaves your device, so there is nothing to claim a licence over.

The narrow exceptions — a video ID sent to the transcript endpoint, and the location lookups the geo tools make — are described precisely in the Privacy Policy. You are responsible for having the right to process whatever you put into a tool.

The site's name, design, written explanations and the code that is specific to it belong to the site operator. The site is built on a large amount of open-source software, every package of which is listed with its licence at /licenses; those licences govern those components, not this document.

Third-party names that appear on the site — YouTube, Google, and the file formats and standards the tools handle — belong to their respective owners and are used only to say what a tool does. Nothing here implies any affiliation or endorsement.

A few tools depend on services that are not ours, and pages sometimes link out to documentation and reference material. Those services and sites have their own terms and their own privacy practices, and the site operator has no control over them and takes no responsibility for them.

The transcript tool retrieves caption tracks that YouTube publishes for a video. What you do with a transcript is your responsibility, and YouTube's own terms apply to that material.

Tools may be added, changed or withdrawn at any time, without notice. These terms may change too. When they do, the "last updated" date at the top of this page moves, and the new version applies from the moment it is published. There is no mailing list to notify, because there are no accounts and no addresses on file.
